This coastal gem had all the right ingredients — a generous section, breathtaking views over Bream Bay, and plenty of untapped potential. The clients initially approached us with the intention of recladding the exterior to address a few minor leaks. However, as the project evolved, so too did the vision. What began as a repair quickly expanded into a full-scale renovation, complete with an extension and reimagined layout.
A new master bedroom with ensuite was added, along with a new front entry to improve both functionality and street appeal. Inside, the entire home was stripped and renovated to reflect a more modern, open-plan style of living.
To replace the dated and hazardous asbestos sheet cladding, we installed James Hardie Linea weatherboards — a durable, attractive choice that gave the home a clean, coastal aesthetic. Updating the cladding wasn't just cosmetic; it required significant structural alterations. Much of the original wall framing had to be modified to accommodate new joinery, and internal walls were adjusted to open up the main living areas.
The second storey, which had long suffered from movement and sway, was stiffened with additional bracing, and the steep, narrow staircase was replaced with a safer, more comfortable alternative.
The result is one of the most dramatic transformations we’ve undertaken — a perfect example of how thoughtful design and construction can bring an old bach back to life. The before-and-after speaks volumes to the clients' vision and the collaborative journey to get there.
